Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Television soap operas have long been a popular form of entertainment across the world, and Nigeria is no exception. These programs often depict family dynamics, relationships, and societal values, influencing viewers' perceptions of family roles, behaviors, and ideals. In Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, television soap operas are widely watched and have a significant impact on shaping family values and social norms. These shows often portray idealized family structures, marital relationships, and parenting styles, which can influence how viewers perceive and enact family roles in their own lives (Adeyemi & Ibrahim, 2023; Nuhu & Bello, 2024). This study explores the influence of television soap operas on family values in Ilorin South, examining how these programs shape attitudes toward marriage, parenting, and family relationships.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While television soap operas are widely consumed in Ilorin South LGA, there is limited research on their impact on family values. Given the significant role that family plays in Nigerian society, it is important to understand how these programs influence perceptions of family dynamics, especially among younger generations. This study aims to assess the extent to which television soap operas shape family values in Ilorin South, particularly in terms of marital relationships, parenting, and gender roles.

The study is limited to the influence of television soap operas on family values in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State. It does not include other forms of television programming or other regions of the state.
